Every child has a different personality, as does a class, as does a teacher. It is 'fun' finding that out and gelling with it.
I worked in a unit attached to a high school. Disabilities etc.
The woman who ran this unit was very stern and very strict with all she met. Almost scary. Why? Because she loved the unit she kept a tight rope and, in my mind, it ran really well.
I absolutely ‘loved’ her and, I don’t know why, it seemed she, me. Crazy!
I overlooked the stern, the strict, the scary, and made her laugh.
These pupils were taken into the normal high school with teacher aids, as well as having small classes in the unit.
That is where I came in.
The retention level was extremely low, if at all in some cases. This fact caused me to go right out there to create way out learning to endeavour their learning.
(I have just been sent a facebook video of a disabilities fun park where these children are in wheelchairs and being surprised and blasted with water from all directions. The delight and smiles on their faces! Priceless …)
So my over the top learning reached its peak there.
I brought in the visuals, the kinaesthetic, the audio – all blasting together. It worked. They remembered the actions, and at times what came with it.
I made them respond.
One time I deliberately excited from the room then, when re-entering, had them give me the queues, the answers, as I walked slowly, yet surely towards the window, then, I started going OUT the window. They had to answer correctly, otherwise I would have fallen out the window. HELP! HELP!!
THEY WERE WITH ME ALL THE WAY…!
Called priceless learning…

Our teaching days are memorable, if not for ourselves, for the children. Let's grab those memorable moments and give them momentum. Even the negative are learning tools, and hence useful for us. I am so grateful I have noted these moments, and trust you feel the same. Please send me any moments of yours you would like to share. Happy reading!
